Troubleshooting

Solutions for common problems.

If you don’t find your issue here, check the FAQ or reach out via Support.

First things to check

Most issues are resolved by a few basic checks.

  1. Is SpriteFrame up to date? Search for SpriteFrame in the App Store and install any available update.
  2. Are you on a supported iPadOS version? SpriteFrame requires iPadOS 17.0 or later.
  3. Have you restarted the app? Swipe SpriteFrame away in the App Switcher and relaunch it.

Export options are grayed out

4× and 8× export scale, and canvas sizes above 32×32, require Pro. If you’re on the Free tier, these controls are disabled by design rather than broken — see FAQ for the full Free/Pro comparison.

Can’t add more frames or projects

Free accounts are capped at 8 frames per canvas and 3 projects total. If you’ve hit either limit, either delete an existing project/frame or upgrade to Pro to remove the cap.

Photo import result looks different from the original photo

This is expected when using a preset retro palette (Game Boy, NES, PICO-8, etc.) — those modes intentionally reduce the color range to match the target platform, using dithering to approximate colors outside the palette. Try Full Color mode if you want to preserve the original color range as closely as possible.

App is slow or unresponsive

Very large canvases (especially at 256×256 with many layers and frames) are more demanding to render. If performance is an issue:

  1. Reduce the number of layers if some can be merged or removed.
  2. Close other apps running in the background.
  3. Restart the app.

App crashes or freezes

  1. Force-quit and reopen the app.
  2. Restart your iPad.
  3. Update to the latest version.
  4. If it still happens, contact Support with:
    • Your iPad model and iPadOS version.
    • The SpriteFrame version (Settings → App Information).
    • What you were doing when it happened.
